Criminy Jones & The Lost Book of Spells - chapter 1

Another foggy day, Criminy Jones thought as she looked out the window. But was it every day in the town of Bad Docks?

"Sad day," shouted Lorre the parrot from his perch, who always speaks the truth, but only when he wants to.

"Undoubtedly!" Criminy responded.

A knock on the door broke the boredom. It was the witch called Hildegard, an ancient witch and a bit crazy. "My favorite spell book is missing from the library!"

"Did you ask the librarian about the lost spell book?"

"Yes!"

"And, did you ask the police?"

"Yes!"

"And, when did it disappear?"

"Since yesterday and before dawn."

Criminy thinks. Hildegard often talks crazy, but also, she was friendly and helpful. Once, Hildegard gave Criminy a health potion. And again, she gave a good luck necklace.

"Yes, I will search for the lost spell book. This afternoon."

"Thank you!" the ancient witch said.

That afternoon, Criminy walks through the fog to the library. Above the door was a gargoyle of a gryphon. "Poor thing," Criminy thought. This gargoyle had a kind spirit trapped within its stone. Many in the city had tried to speak a spell to release the spirit, but none had succeeded. And so, the poor thing was left looking after the library in misery, unable to find the spell which would release it.

Inside the library, Criminy asks the librarian about the lost spell book. "I don't know anything about it," are his only words, but Criminy senses that he is hiding something.

To be continued...
