The Forsaken Village - Chapter 4 - The Unforsaken Village

Chapter 4
The Unforsaken Village

After their arrival at the North Pole, Don Eduardo and Señor Snappy found themselves in the cozy, yet grand, office of Santa Claus himself. The room was adorned with maps of the world, lists that seemed to stretch endlessly, and a large, comfortable chair in which Santa sat, a look of mild concern on his jolly face.

Don Eduardo, ever the gentleman, wasted no time in addressing the matter that had brought them to this far corner of the world. "Santa, we come seeking answers. For several years now, the children of Hawthwaite have been bereft of your Christmas visit. Is there a reason they have been forsaken?"

Santa's face grew somber, his usual mirth dimming. "Ah, Don Eduardo, Señor Snappy, it pains me deeply to hear such words. The children of Hawthwaite are dear to me, as are all children. There was an unfortunate incident of bullying a few years back, but that's long been resolved. No, the truth is far more mundane, I'm afraid."

He leaned forward, the weight of his words as heavy as the sacks of gifts he delivered each year. "The world has grown, my friends. Each year there are more children, more homes to visit. I've stretched my magic as far as it can go, but even with all the wonders at my disposal, I am but one Santa."

Señor Snappy, his scales shimmering slightly under the warm light, nodded in understanding. "The world needs a second Santa Claus!" he exclaimed with a hint of jest, prompting a brief, hearty chuckle from Santa.

Santa, regaining his composure, gestured towards the door leading to the workshop. "Perhaps it's time I show you the extent of my operation. Maybe then, you'll see the challenges we face every Christmas."

As Don Eduardo and Señor Snappy stepped into the grand expanse of Santa's workshop, they were immediately engulfed in a whirlwind of activity. Elves scurried about, their nimble fingers crafting toys and gadgets with a blend of enchantment and burgeoning science.

"Remarkable, isn't it?" Don Eduardo mused, adjusting his bowler hat as he observed an elf tinkering with a toy train. "The marvels of electricity powering these little locomotives. Quite the advancement from the steam engines of our day."

Señor Snappy, peering through his monocle, added, "Indeed, Don Eduardo. And look there, the use of radium paint. It glows in the dark! A recent discovery, but already finding its way into the hands of skilled craftsmen."

They moved through the workshop, each station revealing a new wonder. At one table, an elf enthusiastically demonstrated a toy zeppelin, explaining how it was inspired by the recent successes of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin's airships. "We're experimenting with lighter-than-air gases," the elf said with a twinkle in his eye. "Though, we ensure ours are far safer!"

In another corner, an elf specializing in astronomy discussed the latest theories of the cosmos. "Just think, only a few years ago, we believed the Milky Way was the entirety of the universe. Now, astronomers like Mr. Curtis speculate there might be entire other galaxies beyond our own!"

As they delved deeper, they encountered Eldrin, an elder elf with a sage-like aura, working on a complex contraption that seemed to fuse magic and mechanics seamlessly. "This device," Eldrin began, holding up what appeared to be an intricate astrolabe, "is calibrated to the stars themselves. It aids in navigating the sleigh through the most tumultuous of winter skies."

The tour was a blend of education and enchantment, with each discovery reflecting the dawn of a new era. Yet, amidst the wonder, Don Eduardo sensed an underlying tension. It was when they gathered around a large, ornate sleigh, clearly unused and gathering dust, that the crux of their visit was addressed.

"But Santa, why does such a magnificent sleigh lay dormant?" Don Eduardo inquired, his discerning eyes catching a glimmer of unused magic.

Santa sighed, a twinkle fading from his eyes. "Ah, Don Eduardo, Señor Snappy, this sleigh was built with the intention of expanding our Christmas Eve journey. But alas, we lack the creatures to pull it, and I cannot be in two places at once."

Señor Snappy's eyes gleamed with a blend of mischief and determination. "If only I could fly, I would pull it myself!"

It was then that Eldrin stepped forward, his voice steady yet filled with unspoken mysteries. "Santa, perhaps I may suggest a solution...."
